Under $1 million USD (+-R18M) in revenue?
Free
Game developers (royalties apply after $1 million USD gross product revenue)
Individuals and small businesses (with less than $1 million USD in annual gross revenue)
For educators and schools (no revenue limits)

- Forums and documentation on the Epic Developer Community.
Over $1 million USD (+-R18M) in revenue?
Royalty-based
If you’re creating a game or application that relies on engine code at runtime and will be licensed to third party end users, you’ll pay royalties and won’t be required to purchase seats.
- Any game
- Software such as VR applications, interactive or immersive experiences powered by Unreal Engine that you intend to sell to consumers or other businesses
Cost
All lifetime gross revenue above $1M that is directly attributable to the UE product, regardless of who collects it, will be subject to a 5% royalty. Revenues generated from sales in the Epic Games Store are royalty-free.

Once you ship your game or other application, please submit the Release Notification Form. After that, report your royalties each quarter.
Seat-based
If you’re using Unreal Engine for commercial purposes, have generated more than $1 million in the past 12 months, and are not creating a game or application that relies on engine code at runtime and will be licensed to third party end users, then a seat license fee is required.
- Linear content such as film and television shows, architectural visualizations, graphics for broadcast and live events.
- Applications such as product configurators
- Immersive experiences such as theme park rides or interactive architectural walkthroughs
Cost
R 33,195 ex VAT per seat per year.

Seats are purchased and managed via the Developer Portal.
